Requirements for a TN visa to work in the United States

The TN visa is a fast-track visa for Canadian citizens who want to work in the United States. The work visa is considered to be “fast-tracked” because applicants may apply for the TN visa at the US-Canada border instead of having to fill out an application form, mail it in and wait for the results. TN Visa

This type of United States work visa is only available for Canadian citizens, or citizens of Mexico under the North American Free Trade Agreement. This means that Canadian permanent residents and other foreign nationals are not able to apply for it. In order to be eligible, one has to meet several requirements.

TN Visa Requirements

The TN Visa is not an easy US work visa to get. Applicants must be able to meet the following requirements:

Requirement 1: Applicants for the TN Visa must have a job offer in the United States from a US employer. This job must be on the NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) list of jobs acceptable for a TN visa, which typically include professional occupations like registered nurses, scientists, pharmacists, engineers and lawyers.

Requirement 2: You must be able to show immigration officials that you are qualified for the job you have been offered. You will need supporting documentation like resumes and educational transcripts to do so.

Requirement 3: The TN Visa is a temporary work visa, and you will need to show that you have strong ties to Canada and will return to Canada when you work is over. You can do this with supporting documentation that demonstrates your assets, employment or family in Canada.
